The NEPAD e-Schools Initiative is a priority project of the NEPAD e-Africa Commission which aims to equip African schools with ICT (information and communication technologies) tools to ensure that African youth leave school with skills to participate equally in the global information society and knowledge economy.
As a first phase, the Commission will implement a demonstrator project, the NEPAD e-Schools Demo, to accrue a body of knowledge, based on experiences of implementing ICT in schools across the African continent, which will assist in the rollout of the broader NEPAD e-Schools Initiative.
The Demo will establish and monitor six NEPAD e-Schools in each of 20 African countries.
In preparation for the implementation of the Demo, the Commission convened a workshop of the NEPAD e-Schools Coordinating Body at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria, South Africa on January 24-26 2005.
The Coordinating Body comprises senior officials from the Departments of Education and Communications from all participating African countries.
The purpose of the workshop was:
· To provide feedback to the NEPAD e-Schools Coordinating Body on progress with NEPAD e-Schools activities;
· To discuss the implementation framework for the NEPAD e-Schools Demo;
· To approve the components of the Demo implementation framework, including the timetable for implementation;
· To introduce the Coordinating Body to the private sector companies that will play a substantial role in implementation of the Demo.
