Indiscipline and Primaries

Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama, will always be remembered for his well thought of and chosen subject, indiscipline, which poses a social danger in every civilised society which wants to make it to commanding heights.
The ongoing GBC TV programme, which is made in the form of an advertisement as a campaign against indiscipline, a social canker is very laudable indeed. It is gradually creating awareness and making the desired positive impact in the metropolis.
During the parliamentary primaries to select good candidates to contest the 2004 elections on the tickets of political parties, the process was grossly marred with undemocratic practices, ethnic/tribal tension, intra-party divisiveness and hatred; vote-buying, some top ranking party functionaries who were supposed to be just observers even took sides (imposition of bad material); violence threats; camping majority of the polling station chairmen (Electoral College) days before the voting.
In an instance there was a visit to a fetish shrine in a constituency in the northern part of the Volta Region to be sure of victory.
Has politics now become a battle between life and death in our young democracy or a lucrative industry where one can easily and comfortably make huge financial dividends, acquire property within a very short period?
The political parties, the EC and opinion leaders should review this important national issue.
Such undemocratic practices by some of the new breed of selfish and arrogant politicians who want to be called "Honourable" just for a few years, should have an antidote to it to make those nefarious, dishonest, corrupt and undemocratic practices unattractive to those aspirants with secret political agenda of creating ethnic/tribal passion and disunity in the constituencies for cheap selfish gain.
During the heat of the much-criticised primaries across the country, H. E. Alhaji Aliu Mahama in a statement, which was carried on the electronic and print media appealed to such aspirants to use the colossal amounts of money some of them were spending, at that time, to the benefit of their constituencies since winning primaries is not a yardstick of automatically being elected a Member of Parliament.
It is appropriate that the wisdom of H. E. Alhaji Aliu Mahama, about the primaries be included in his informative and educative GBC TV programme about the ongoing campaign against indiscipline before the primaries of 2008 commence.
