A group of common people in Nima call for "Zamanlafiya" in Ghana
and tells the NDC leader to...
Leave Kufuor Alone

Yesterday, Tuesday April 19, 2005 a group going by the name of "Liberal Democrats" held a press conference in the suburb of Nima in Accra to "share with you our position on the vicious attacks by ex-President Rawlings on the person of President J.A Kufuor and the Presidency of the Republic of Ghana."
A very touching aspect of this press conference was the English in which the message was couched. It was written in what seemed like Pidgin English and showed the grass roots nature of the movement.
The statement had obviously not been subjected to the scrutiny and "approval" from any "booklong" quarters. This was not the kind of sleek and polished language of Ghana's political elite, but the heartfelt lament of the "common man."
ADM has tried to do some editing of the press statement and the following message was distillated: Chief among the compelling reasons for this conference is to unclothe the diabolical act of the CJA on who's platform, ex-President Rawlings launched a barrage of insults on the person of the President of the Republic of Ghana which also cast a slur on the good sense of the majority of our people who see in the President a responsible, caring, honest and true statesman.
You may recall that in the so called Wahala Demonstration 2 organized by the CJA to unreasonably press home their demand for a reduction in the price of petrol and petroleum products, the ex-president unjustifiably launched vicious and indecent attacks on the sitting president.
Granted that we are free to exercise our democratic rights through free speech, freedom of association and civilized demonstrations as directed by democracy and the rule of law, it behooves also on us to exhibit high moral standards, decency and decorum as imbedded in our social code.
Even as we re-echo the clarion call for peace, sobriety, decency and tolerance, it is only proper to remind our good selves of dangers inherent in such un-guided rhetoric, from no less a person than the ex-president, for it will not only open the gate for sliding down to indiscipline but could also plunge our dear nation into chaos and anarchy.
So to seek under any guise, be it wahala demonstration or whatever, to send the good people of this beautiful country to those dark and horrible days of near slavery would indeed be massively resisted by all means and at all cost.
The Liberal Democrats in conjunction with other democratic forces in the country are poised to halt this seemingly apathetic situation by calling on Ghanaians, irrespective of political affiliations who share our concerns and aspirations to join in the ZAMANLAFIYA march for peace and reconciliation.
We wish to make it emphatically clear that our decision is not to counter the CJA's demonstrations in any way. However it is instructive to emphasize that much as the CJA has a right to demonstrate, we equally have a constitutional right to do the same.
The purpose of our outpouring onto the street some few days from today is two-fold:
1) To uncover a systematically orchestrated plan to provoke the sensibility of civil society groups and other unsuspecting Ghanaians to back his (Rawlings) action for unnecessary civil strife, by strategically painting a gloomy picture of the state of affairs (in Ghana).
2) To demonstrate our unflinching support and solidarity with the government's major political decisions. We also wish not only to dismantle the notion that this government is heartless and insensitive as others seek to portray it, but emphasise that it is one of high sense of civility and true character.
