God is Good
Dedicated to Pope John Paul II

Ekow Adabie | Posted: Tuesday, April 26, 2005

I am a Christian. Even though I was baptized and confirmed a Methodist, I usually go to Christ the King Catholic Church. My favourite pastor is Mensah Otabil of CGIC and I also listen to the pearls of wisdom on the Islamic programs on Ghana TV.

A sort of an all-round Christian who also believes that if all religions heeded to the core messages of their creed, the world would be a very peaceful place - the only problem in the equation is a constant- the human-being.

I am an ardent supporter of the late Pope John Paul II's vision to bring all religions together - a Herculean task constantly thwarted by restless and heartless humans.

Even the Pope was faced with opposition in the Vatican when he tried to visit the Jews in Jerusalem - but he had this to tell his cardinals - 'If you don't make the necessary arrangements, I will go by public transport" and he meant it.

If we should all go back to the basic tenets of our religions we will find jointly and severally, that there is truly only one God. So I have a dream that one day, soon, I will be able to go to any Christian church and take communion with my Methodist credentials - you cannot do that in our orthodox churches now - what a pity - refusing to give bread and wine to a hungry Christian brother.

God's laws are simple and only a few if we bother to find out. Even the 10 Commandments were summarized for Christians by Jesus into 2 simple laws.

1) Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.

2) Love thy neighbour as thyself.

Now tell me, what is so complicated about these laws. I visited the Registrar General's office last Friday. You will weep for the way we store the volumes of documents we have designed and filled out just to comply with the hundreds of laws for companies, partnerships, marriages etc.

Not to mention the rubbishy folder they give you when you buy forms for company registration. The manufacturer should be shot out of his ineptitude. I repent.

I almost forgot that I was preaching God today - that is the human in me. Whilst in the Ministries you may as well want to find out what happens to all those yellow cards you fill out when you travel by air - they are all in storage - not on hard disks but on hard floors in cocoa sacks.

They are all there, since the Wright brothers invented the plane. Imagine an Amnesty International detective trying to find out the number of Ghanaian political passengers on Accra-London BOAC Flight 201 of 25th February 1966 - he'll probably need a bulldozer for the work.

Do we question why we even store these things and how and how long they should be stored? The answer is simple - there are laws governing their stockpile.

It is quite the same for passports, births and deaths, IRS, Customs, Police, gazettes etc, etc. And I almost forgot the mother of all hoarders: the law courts! Just how many cases, laws, statues, amendments, judgements do we have piled up in some form of storage?

Thousands, millions - your guess is as good as mine. And why are we holding on to millions of laws? It is merely because man finds it sooooo difficult to uphold just 2 laws as encapsulated by the simple Son of man.

From what I hear from our Muslim brothers, Buddhists, Jews and even the American - we all seek the peace that can come from just 2 simple laws.

I gave my American friends a special mention because I lived and schooled there. You sure ain't gonna find no much religion in them Gad-forsakin'schools out there, nooo sirrrr -- and I believe that is why they have more human laws.

I worked out the scientific formula that shows the correlation between God's laws and the proliferation of man's decrees: "Human laws are geometric inverses of the level of the people's adherence to God's laws".

The formula is yet to be patented, registered and protected by the laws of the country. Is it not amazing that on that fateful day of 9/11 - God keep their souls - the American Congress rightly found time to pray to God who has been long abandoned in their education system?

I am not judging here, it just my matheligious calculation - and you know science can be wrong, at times. Don't bet all your life and hope on man-made sciences. My advice to all my busy, law-strangled fellow men is, just let go of the burden of human laws.

Serve God with your whole mind and soul, no matter your religion - and love thy neighbour as thyself. One World, Two Laws.
