NPP supporters urged to help build a united and strong party

GNA | Posted: Friday, May 06, 2005

The Eastern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addi Ankamah, has observed that the current wrangling and disunity among some of the supporters of the party have the potential to deny it victory in the 2008 general elections.

He said there was the need for supporters of the party to build a united and stronger front in the face of the current happenings in the party.

Nana Ankamah said this on Monday when the Akropong constituency branch of the NPP held a get-together for about 350 polling agents and executives of the party, who helped the party in last year's general elections in the constituency.

He noted that if the party remains united "there is no way any political party can ever come to power", adding, "but your own actions will be your downfall".

Nana Ankamah called on party functionaries, who want positions in the party, to show what they can do for the party rather than " writing of letters and regular complains against each other, an act, which tends to undermine the unity in the party."

He appealed to supporters of the party to channel their grievances and complains through the appropriate channels.

Nana Addi Ankamah stressed that the NPP has a constitution and therefore urged members of the party to address their grievances according to the party's constitution but not to use their discretion in solving issues, "Drastic measures would be taken against any body who flout the party constitution", he cautioned.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Akropong, Mr William Ofori Boafo, praised the polling agents and the executives for their vigilance and dedication, which culminated in the retention of power by the party.

He charged the polling agents and the executives to see the get-together as a way of fostering unity among them and not to allow any parochial interest to separate them.

Mr Boafo, who is also the deputy Minister for Defence reminded them that the success of the party and for that matter, the nation depended on no body other than the individuals in the party through their positive actions.

A leading member of the party in the constituency, Mr Kwaku Ansah Asare, who hosted the members, called on the party's supporters not to be discouraged by the results of the Asawase by-election. But, he advised, they should rather allow the results to motivate them to fight hard to win future elections.

He noted that if the party is to make any meaningful progress by 2008, there is the need for the party members to eschew the current backbiting in the party and to remain focus and united.

Mr Ansah Asare said though the party was in power, it needed to build a good image in other to retain power in the next elections and also to gain the goodwill of the people.
