Grunsah may face assault and battery charges - Police

GNA | Posted: Friday, May 06, 2005

The Kpando District Command of the Ghana Police Service said Alhaji Karim Grunsah, chairman of King Faisal Football Club may face assault and battery charges if investigations currently going on implicate him in the Kpando Sports Stadium disorder.

Kpando District Commander Chief Superintendent Amidu Abdulai Salifu told the GNA Sports that Alhaji was granted bail with one surety - an executive member of Kpando Hearts of Lions.

Alhaji Grunsah poked his forefinger into the left eye of a soccer fan at the Kpando Sports Stadium when his King Faisal played Heart of Lions in an outstanding match on Wednesday, April 27. The mach ended in a 1-1 draw.

The incident angered supporters of the Kpando club who wanted to take their pound of flesh, but they were prevented by the police who whisked Grunsah to safety.

The police chief said to prevent any nasty incident during the investigations and particularly to ensure the safety of Alhaji Grunsah, the Kpando Police Command had transferred the case to the Divisional Headquarters at Hohoe.

The Police Chief said though an incident occurred at the stadium, it was grossly exaggerated by the media.

He said the victim in the case, identified as Raymond Affram could not be found on the day of the incident but surfaced the next day with his eye firmly fixed in the socket contrary to reports that it had been plucked by Grunsah.

Chief Superintendent Salifu said the police issued the victim a medical form and directed him to go to the hospital for examination.

He said based on his observation, Alhaji Grunsah could not be charged with causing harm because no physical harm had been caused.

When GNA Sports visited the Ophthalmology Clinic of the Margaret Marquart Catholic Hospital to ascertain the severity of the eye problem, the attendants at the clinic confirmed that the victim was there on Wednesday, the day of the incident to receive treatment.

But they could not give any more details as they claimed Reverend Sister Tofa, who attended to the victim, was not available. They again stated that they were not qualified to divulge any information on the issue.

Another attempt to contact Mr Vincent Ahiakpor, elder brother of the Victor Ahiakpor, president of Heart of Lions proved futile as he was reported to have taken the victim to the eye clinic at the Hohoe Hospital.

Meanwhile, GNA investigations confirm that Alhaji Grunsah and his family are pulling strings to prevent the matter from going to court.
