Ningo to get a 252-metre bridge

Martha Eshun -Oppong | Posted: Tuesday, May 24, 2005

Drivers who ply the Dawhenya- Prampram-Anyaman road will from August this year have access to a 252-metre bridge that links the Old and New Ningo Prampram towns.

The bridge, which is in its final stage of completion, will facilitate vehicular and pedestrian movement between the two towns. Currently, these road users use a rough road stretching over two miles that links the towns.

Inspecting the construction, Minister of Roads and Transport, Hon. Richard Anane said the bridge would boost the socio-economic development of the area.

He said the project was originally awarded to Messrs Frandesco (WA) Ltd at the cost of $8.7milliom in 1994 for completion within 640 days. WA however failed to complete the project within the time frame though various extensions to the completion time were granted.

Due to non-performance by the WA Ltd, the project was subsequently terminated on May 22 2003 and was re-awarded to M/S Daewoo Engineering and Construction Company at the cost of $1.2million on June 4 2004 for completion.

As of the time of the re-awarding of the contract to M/S, 70% of the work was however completed. The outstanding works included a construction of 3Nos. deck slabs with their beams, construction of 2Nos.approach slabs, construction of kerbs and balustrades, construction of pedestrian walkway and the erection of crash barriers.

The Minister assured that the bridge would officially be commissioned in August 2005. The bridge is hoped to last for 50 years and over.

Hon. Richard Anane also inspected the construction of an 18-metre wide bridge that links Ashaiman and Tema on the motorway.

The project is being sponsored by the government with aid from the France government.

The resident engineer J.B. Asafo Boakye from Sonitra Construction Company said the project would be complete in August this year.
