Kusum Gboo honoured at Music Awards

| Posted: Tuesday, May 24, 2005

Kusum Gboo Dance Ensemble once again made history when it became the first ever traditional music/dance group to be honoured at the prestigious Ghana Music Awards, which was recently held in Accra.

The technical committee that selected Kusum Gboo as the Most Popular Group was impressed by the group's production of two albums that are heavily inspired by indigenous Ghanaian rhythms as well as its unflinching dedication to the sustenance, development and promotion of the rich Ghanaian cultural heritage through music and dance.

Kusum Gboo, who recently celebrated its silver jubilee with a concert at the Alliance Française in Accra, has performed to enthusiastic audiences in several European and African countries.

In 2001, the group represented Ghana at Festival Mundial - a large scale multi cultural festival held in the Dutch city of Tilburg where they raised the flag of Ghana with over twenty-five performances and workshops.

The group undertook a tour of some European countries in 2003, which resulted in performances in Holland Belgium and Norway. In Norway, the group toured about one-third of the country with numerous performances and workshops in schools, community centres, theatres and cultural houses.

Kusum Gboo's albums - "Akrowasei" and "Worminba" with its lyrics in diverse Ghanaian languages, received wide acclaim from traditional music fans in Ghana and overseas after their release at the Golden Tulip Hotel and the British Council Hall respectively.

Hiplife musician Obour walked the red carpet with five awards at the colourful ceremony, which also witnessed the honouring of over fifteen other musicians.

A number of musicians including 2 Face Idibia, Batman, K.K. Fosu, Rex Omar, Castro, Tic Tac and the man of the moment Obour delighted the packed Accra International Conference Centre with refreshing music.

The awards ceremony, which was organised by Charter House, was sponsored by Gulder Beer, Western Union, Spacefon-Areeba, Unique Trust, TV 3, Novotel and others.
