In a five-hour solemn ceremony at the weekend at the Holy Spirit Cathedral, Adabraka, Accra, Most Rev. Gabriel Charles Angela Nii Obuobisa Papa Bi Palmer-Buckle was installed the new Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra.
He took over from Archbishop Dominic Kodwo Andoh, Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of Accra, who has served the archdiocese for 34 years.
Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson, Archbishop of the Cape Coast Archdiocese, Archbishop George Kocherry, Apostolic Nuncio and Most Rev. Dominic Andoh, enthroned him in these words: "We enthrone you as the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen".
The crosier, a symbol of authority, was immediately handed over to him after his enthronement.
In his homily, Archbishop Buckle said he chose his motto, Omnibus Omnia Factus Sum (Latin), meaning I make myself all things to all people so that I may win at least some for Christ. (1Cor. 9:22) in order for him to be everything to all traditionally, culturally, religiously, politically, economically and spiritually.
He asked all in leadership positions to wake up to their call, otherwise God, the chief shepherd, would take the charge from them.
"Although I tremble at the enormity of my responsibilities, I am inspired by what Jesus told Peter in Jn 21:15-19," he said. He asked that God grant him the grace to be ever obedient to serve him and his people with an undivided heart and asked that all pray for him.
He also called on all religious leaders and indeed all Ghanaians to work hand in hand in order to make our dear Ghana the most peaceful of all countries in the world.
Most Rev. Lucas Abadamloora, President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference (GCBC), congratulated the Benjamin of the archbishops and wished him nothing but the very best. The GCBC presented to him a chasuble.
President John Agyekum Kufuor in a message congratulated the newly-installed Archbishop and assured him the support of his government and constant prayers. He commended Most Rev. Dominic Andoh for a good job done and wished him a happy retirement.
In appreciation for all that Most Rev. Andoh had been to him - a mentor, a source of inspiration and a friend - Archbishop Palmer-Buckle, in the company of the other bishops of the dioceses in Ghana blessed, in a special way, the Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus.
Present at the ceremony were President John Agyekum Kufuor and the First Lady, some ministers of state and members of the National Reconciliation Commission, all Catholic bishops and archbishops in Ghana, priests in the Archdiocese of Accra, Rev. Sisters and Brothers, Most Rev. Joseph Ganda, the sole archbishop of Sierra Leone, Bishop Philippe Oueraogo, president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference in Burkina Faso and Niger, Monsignor Matthew Cooker, secretary-general of the Nigerian Catholic Bishops' Conference and a member of the Nigerian Truth Commission, Most Rev.
