Ghanaian films for sometime now have diverted from portraying our culture to portray that of Nigeria. Before I go on, let me seize this opportunity to define culture. Culture in its simplest form is the unique way of life led by a certain group of people and this includes values, beliefs and customs etc.
Going by this definition, I wish to contend emphatically that Ghana has a very good and rich culture that needs to be shown to the outside world. In doing this, the media and the film industry have a role to play. However, are they really doing it in terms of dress code, language, attitudes etc?
Why should our local movies portray rich people in suits, lace and foreign attires but those in our local dress like Tie-and-Dye, Batik, Kaba and smock as poor people? It is obvious in Ghanaian films that the smock is for watchmen and the tie-and-dye for the house helps. So in this regard are we telling the outside world that our own wears are for the people of low class?
Not quite long ago our President advocated " Friday Wear'', and the filmmakers who are supposed to support the president to preach this gospel are doing otherwise. How then can it work? ERNEST KOFI FRIMPONG OFFEN JAYEE INSTITUTE ACCRA.
