IN DEFENCE OF THE PRESIDENT

AKWASI AFRIFA-KYEI
ABUJA - NIGERIA. | Posted: Wednesday, August 31, 2005

Dear Editor,
In the past few weeks the Ghanaian media and political community appear to have been grossly poisoned with insalubrious statements which could be perceived as attempts to denigrate and discredit the high office of the Presidency and indeed the incumbent President himself; which to all intents and purpose were aimed at removing the president from office unconstitutionally.

Some of us have keenly followed the unfolding events at home from the internet coverage and have no other choice but to denounce these acts of political chicanery by those who disrespect the fact that political protests of any kind within the confines of decency and integrity are "sine qua non" of democratic norms and dispensation, but so also is democracy anchored in the rule of law.

We need therefore to remind ourselves in view of the unwarranted attacks on the person of the President, that he was democratically elect ed by the good people of Ghana for a four-year term and not only that but won a very comfortable majority at the polls. On this score, unless incontrovertible evidence is produced to prove that the President has exhibited any acts showing impairment of the mind which renders him unable to govern the country or he has infringed the constitution, no amount of scurrilous attacks should/would be permitted to terminate this Presidency.

It is equally absurd and disgusting to realize then that some Ghanaians would be so unconcerned about the peace and security of our country as to team up with a complete foreigner with no allegiance and has no stake whatsoever to the survival of our dear country to try to undermine our security and stability. What these moral and ethical desperadoes need to know is that the President was constitutionally elected for a four-year term and Ghanaians must allow that mandate to run its natural.

One last word of advice, Ghanaians have freed themselves forever from militarism and we must defend and protect this President until his political mandate concludes in 2008. For now there is no vacancy at the Presidential Villa in the Castle. God Bless the good people of Ghana. Good will always overcome evil.
