The Tarkwa branch of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) is indebted to the scheme to the tune of 9.3 billion cedis.
Mr Samuel Annang, the Tarkwa Branch Manager of SSNIT, said this at a one-day seminar organised for 100 employers drawn from some organisations and companies at Tarkwa.
He said companies and organizations that are in active service owe the scheme 2.9 billion cedis whereas defunct companies owe it 6.3 million cedis.
"Some dormant companies are indebted to the scheme to the tune of 34 million cedis and we are making efforts to get them defray their debt or we will be compelled to take legal action against them", he said.
''Efforts are also being made to track down dormant or defunct companies and organisations.'' He added.
Mr Samuel Annang also noted that some of the problem SSNIT faces are wrong quotation of the social security number by claimants and failure to put date of birth on one's social security card.
He therefore appealed to employers, especially those in the mining companies, not to shield expatriates who refuse to pay the contribution of those they employ.
Mr Kwaku Osei Bimpong, the Public Affairs Manager of SSNIT, who was also present at the seminar, said SSNIT is focusing more on being customer friendly. "We are focusing our inspectorate activity on the contributors so as to know their problems and resolve them.''
