English Premiership review

By Kofi Agyepong & Sky sports. | Posted: Thursday, September 22, 2005

Champions Chelsea continued their ominous form with victory at Charlton, while Manchester United played out a dull goalless draw at Liverpool.

The Blues put their 100 percent record on the line against Charlton at The Valley - the only other team going into the weekend's action with an unblemished record.

However, it was Charlton's perfect start that soon disappeared as Hernan Crespo and Arjen Robben scored to seal a comfortable 2-0 victory for Jose Mourinho's men.

While Chelsea were continuing their unprecedented start to the new campaign - Liverpool and United played out a highly uninspiring 0-0 draw.

Michael Owen opened his Newcastle account as The Magpies registered their first Premiership win with a 3-0 victory at Blackburn, as Alan Shearer and Charles N'Zogbia also pounced.

Bolton climbed into fourth place after they won 1-0 at Manchester City, although the home side were left scratching their heads at the final whistle after hitting the woodwork five times, before conceding a last-minute penalty to hand The Trotters victory.

Sunderland are still without a Premiership win since 2002, as they were held 1-1 by West Brom at The Stadium of Light.

Gary Breen's early header had seemed like being enough for The Black Cats, but Zoltan Gera broke Wearside hearts with a leveller in injury time.

Yakubu Aiyegbeni grabbed his second goal in two games for Middlesbrough, but it was not enough to seal victory as Wigan claimed a 1-1 draw at The JJB Stadium thanks to Henri Camara's goal.

West Ham secured their second win in six days as they came out 2-1 winners over London rivals Fulham.

Marlon Harewood bagged his fourth goal of the week, before his shot was diverted into the net by Tony Warner for a second. Luis Boa Morte pulled one back for The Cottagers, but it proved to be no more than a consolation.

Saturday's late kick-off saw Tottenham come from behind to land a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa. James Milner opened the scoring with his first goal for Villa, before Jermain Defoe failed to convert from the penalty spot after Wilfred Bouma's handball. Substitute Robbie Keane was the Spurs hero as he came off the bench and finished clinically.

Finally, Portsmouth were held to a 1-1 draw by ten-man Birmingham at Fratton Park. Tresor Lomana Lua Lua had put Pompey ahead early on, but Jiri Jarosik was on hand to level matters for the visitors - who had Nicky Butt dismissed just before the interval.
