DEVTRACO Limited, a real estate developing firm based in Accra, has handed over a newly built and furnished offices complex to the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of the Tema Community Two District Police.
Mr. Joseph Aidoo, Managing Director of DEVTRACO, said the donation formed part of the company's social commitment to the community within which it operates.
He hoped that other corporate citizens would emulate the kind gesture of DEVTRACO to expand the government's efforts at equipping the Police Service to effectively perform its functions.
The Interior Minister Papa Owusu-Ankomah, who officially commissioned the building, said the government has, for the past five years, been seriously addressing critical problems facing the Ghana Police Service and cited the provision of large number of vehicles to the service by the Kufuor Administration as an example.
The Minister said the government is considering other issues affecting the service including lack of effective communication gadgets and decent accommodation for personnel. He explained that the government alone could not provide for all these needs owing to other competing needs on the national budget. "This is where individual members of the public as well as the private sector are invited to assist the Ghana Police Service with some of its much-needed logistics", the Interior Minister said.
Papa Owusu-Ankomah expressed gratitude on behalf of the government and the Ghana Police Service to the management of DEVTRACO and other institutions in the Municipality that have been supporting the police. He mentioned Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) and Karls-Inn Ltd among the helping institutions and urged others to emulate them by making provision for support to the police, as they prepare their budgets for the coming years.
The Community Two District Police Commander, DSP John Naami, expressed appreciation to DEVTRACO for the kind gesture and promised the effective use and maintenance of the facility. He said the District MTTU staff has been working under a shed meant for vehicles.
But, he added that they were not daunted in putting out the best in them. He said the good spirit demonstrated by the staff, which motivated DEVTRACO to put up the new offices for them, would multiply. He expressed gratitude to other institutions that have been supporting the Ghana Police Service.
He disclosed that Karls-Inn Ltd an Internet service providing firm, which has been motivated by the efforts of the District Police Patrol Team at fighting crime, is constructing a gym for them at the District Police Headquarters to help build them up.
DASHWOOD, a shipping and stevedoring company based in Tema, has also donated stationery items to the new office.
