Mr. Opoku Agyemang Prempeh, Executive President of the Centre for Moral Education (CEMED), an NGO that focuses on promoting sound moral values among the youth, has appealed to Parliament to be cautious in promulgating the Domestic Violence Bill.

He said the bill had some clauses that should be addressed before its promulgation in order not to create problems for Ghanaians.

Mr. Prempeh made the appeal at a day's seminar organized by CEMED in Kumasi for selected leaders of youth groups within the Kumasi Metropolis.

It was to educate youth leaders on the significance of the Bill and seek their views. Mr Prempeh said although the Bill is laudable the clause on marital rape should be critically re-examined and re-defined to make it more friendly and acceptable by society. He suggested that instead of focusing more on marital rape, the Bill should highlight issues pertaining to child abuse, maltreatment of house helps and assault on spouses.

Mr. Prempeh called on the advocates of the Bill to organise intensive and sustained discussions with queenmothers, marriage counselors, religious leaders and lawyers on how to structure the Bill.

"These are people directly involved in issues related to marriage, having much insight to domestic affairs and would be in a better position to help shape the Bill for society," he added.
