French naval ship on a visit to Ghana

French Polyvalent workshop ship “Jules VERNE” docked yesterday, Thursday September 22, 2005 at Tema Harbour to pay a routine call to Ghana in the course of her regular missions along the West Coast of Africa. She will depart tomorrow, Saturday September 24,2005.
The purpose of the visit is to reinforce the existing ties between the French and the Ghanaian naval forces.
Under the command of Commander Yann HERVE since November 26, 2004, FNS ‘Jules VERNE’ has a staff of 17 officers, 162 petty officers and 72 seamen.
The main role of the “Jules VERNE”, the French Navy’s greatest supply ship, is operational service support for a Navy Task Force and/or amphibious expeditionary unit deployed in the frame of overseas operations. The program could include common activities between the Ghanaian and French Navies like training on board security, bridge training, tactical network and evolution of diving equipment.
Commander Yann HERVE joined the French Naval Academy in 1983. He served on numerous operational appointments on nuclear submarines and as submarine warfare trainer from 1985 to 1994.
He was appointed as Second-In-Command of first destroyers (“Estienne d’Orves”and “Commandant Bouan”) and then on frigates: “Vendemaiire” in 1996-1997 and “De Grasse” in 1998-2000. He was appointed as Commanding officer on Board Patrol Boat “Cormoran” (1996), the Sparate Amphibious Unit in Djibouti (2002) and finally on “Jules VERNE” on November 2004.
Commander HRVE took part in operational missions such as: “Sharp Guard”, in Adraitic Sea (five times), “United Shield” in Mogadiscio and “Heracles” in Indian Ocean.
