NADMO official advises communities on fire fighting

GNA | Posted: Tuesday, October 04, 2005

Mr. Alfred Attah-Yeboah, Nkoranza District Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has urged fire volunteers to lead the people and farmers to prepare fire belts at the outskirts of the communities and along their farms.

He gave the advice to the people of Boama in the district when he accompanied Mr. James Kwabena Appiah-Awuah, District Chief Executive, on a familiarization tour of the area.

The Co-ordinator asked the people not to wait for the bush to dry up before preparing the fire belts but to weed around their areas early enough, so that the green grass that would sprout out would prevent the spread of bushfires.

Mr. Attah-Yeboah announced that NADMO is arranging for the supply of logistics such as wellington boots and cutlasses for outstanding fire volunteers in the district to encourage them to perform well.

He called on assembly members, unit committees and traditional authorities to support and encourage fire volunteers to undertake their activities effectively.

Mr. Opoku Badu, Unit committee secretary, in a welcome address appealed to the Assembly to support the people with three packets of roofing sheets and 50 bags of cement to complete a kindergarten project.

He asked the DCE to liaise with the government to connect the area to the national electricity grid to enhance the development of the area.

Mr. Badu cautioned that byelaws on bushfires were still in force and any person who would set fire to destroy people's property as well as the environment would be arrested and prosecuted.

Mr. Appiah-Awuah commended the people for constructing a free three-bedroom-house for teachers in the area.

He urged parents to take advantage of the government's fee-free policy for pupils at the basic level and enroll their children in schools.
