New Office for GWGL Workers Union

GNA | Posted: Wednesday, November 02, 2005

A 75 million cedi-office for the Local Mines Workers Union of Wexford Goldfields Limited (WGL) has been inaugurated at Wassa Akyempim.

Mr. Maxwell Nyarko, Branch Secretary pledged the commitment of the executives to protect the rights of workers and create healthy atmosphere for their operations.

Mr. Samuel Amponsah, Industrial Relations Officer of the Ghana Mine Workers Union said the Union should not be seen as an antagonistic force to management.

He said the provision of the office shows the recognition for and commitment of management to co-exist with the union.

Mr. Richard Gray, Managing Director and General Manager of the company, said the office would foster co-operation and unity between workers and management.

Mr Gray said the company had so far invested 65 million dollars in the mine and appealed to the workers to collaborate with the management for an effective operation.

The Managing Director said a major problem facing the mine is low-grade ore, which demands that the plant operate 24 hours.
