Physically challenged receive wheel chairs
GNA | Posted: Monday, November 28, 2005
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Wednesday donated 500 wheel chairs to some physically challenged in Kumasi. Mr Kofi Baah, Co-ordinator in-charge of the church's charities, presenting the wheel chairs, said the presentation formed part of the church's social responsibility to support the needy in society.
He said last year the church presented 1,000 wheel chairs to the physically challenged in the Ashanti region and appealed to the recipients to make judicious use of them. Mr Obiri Ferguson, Ashanti Regional President of the church, urged the physically challenged to register with the Department of Social Welfare and the Association of Physically Challenged to know their number and needs.
Mr John Ernest Amponsah, Ashanti Regional Deputy Director of the Department of Social Welfare, on behalf of the recipients thanked the church for the gesture. He said the department had established rehabilitation centres in each of the 10 regions and appealed to the physically challenged to take advantage of the centres to acquire skills to be self-employed.
