HMS LIVERPOOL COMING FOR EXERCISE

| Posted: Monday, February 06, 2006

The British Royal Navy ship, HMS Liverpool, will visit the port of Tema from 6-10 Feb 06. HMS Liverpool is part of the Royal Navy's South Atlantic patrol force providing a tangible UK maritime presence in the South Atlantic as well as providing a presence in West Africa in support of UN and UK interests. This will be her first trip to Ghana.

The purpose of the visit is to demonstrate and reinforce bilateral ties between Ghana and the United Kingdom. Four young Ghanaian Naval Officers have joined the ship at Freetown for familiarisation training and HMS Liverpool will carry out joint manoeuvres with the Ghana Navy on her departure.

As part of their course, Ghanaian students attending the inaugural Exclusive Economic Zone course at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College will visit the ship. Whilst in Tema the Captain, Commander Henry Duffy, will pay a courtesy call on the Tema Mantse, Nii Adjei Krakue and the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive. The Ship's crew will also assist with community projects during their visit.

HMS Liverpool (D92) is a Type 42 (Batch 2) destroyer. She was launched in 1980 and commissioned in 1982. She is equipped with Sea Dart surface to air missiles, Vickers Mark 8 4.5-inch gun, Vulcan Phalanx and 20mm guns and carries a Lynx helicopter.

HMS Liverpool is supported by a Royal Fleet Auxiliary Gold Rover, which also supported HMS Cardiff when she visited Tema in April 2004.
