The Tolon-Kumbungu District Chief Executive, Mr. Wahab Suhiyini Wumbei has warned head teachers in the district to refrain from using the television sets provided their schools by the District Assembly for games.
They should rather put the facilities into good use to enable the students to benefit from the President's Special Initiative on Distance Learning.
Mr Wumbei gave the warning when he presented 25 colour television sets valued at 105 million cedis and 10,000 exercise books on behalf of the District Assembly to some selected Junior Secondary Schools in the area.
He said investment in education holds the key to the development of the human resource base of every society or nation and that was why the government has focused its attention on education.
He gave the assurance that the Assembly would continue to complement the government's efforts at providing basic educational infrastructure to the communities to enhance effective teaching and learning.
The DCE announced that the Assembly, last year, spent 950 million cedis on educational infrastructure while it disbursed 340 million cedis to support 221 teacher trainees in the various Teacher Training Colleges to ensure that schools in the district would have the full complement of its teaching staff by 2010.
The Assembly was also supporting 171 untrained teachers to upgrade themselves to the Diploma in Basic Education while it was giving serious consideration to the provision of teachers' accommodation to address the problem of teachers commuting between Tamale and Tolon to teach.
