AshGold demand facility user fee

| Posted: Wednesday, March 22, 2006

Ashanti Gold, owners of the Len Clay Stadium, is demanding a flat rate of six thousand dollars for the use of the stadium for continental matches.

All four Ghanaian clubs playing in African club competitions this year are using the Len Clay Stadium as home venue and Ashgold expect $600,000 from each club before allowing them the use of the stadium. In a fortnight they will all be in action at the Obuasi Park for the return legs of their continental matches.

Kudjoe Fianoo, chief executive officer of Ashanti Gold, says the club need to charge the fee to keep the pitch in good shape for the impending assignments.

'We've realized we'd be in bad business if we stick to the 15% on the gross proceeds. Also, the match days (Friday and Saturday) will affect the expected gate proceeds.

What this means is that we (AshantiGold) will overstretch our resources in putting up the place and the returns that we're getting is not commensurate with what we're recovering'. He added. Cudjoe Fianoo also accused some clubs of under declaring the gate proceeds.

'One other consideration is that some of the clubs were not keeping faith with us. If tickets will be sold in advance and those tickets cannot be accounted for then definitely the situation has to be reviewed.

The clubs declared a specific amount but we heard different from the grapevine, so we think its better we charge a flat rate, take our money and leave the stadium to whoever is coming to play on the match day.'
